Operation Ivy

Last summer, the New York Times ran a story about the renewed popularity of preppy all-American style, featuring photos by Japanese photographer Teruyoshi Hayashida.  In 1965, Hayashida visited college campuses on the East coast to capture the everyday style of Ivy League men, and published them in a collection called “Take Ivy.”  I marveled at the few photos I saw, and had forgotten about the collection until I ran across an old post on A Continuous Lean  with scans from the book.

Aren’t the photos swoon-worthy?  “Take Ivy” is extremely hard to find, and sells for upwards of $1,000 on eBay.  To my delight, I noticed that a reissue will be available through Amazon starting August 31, 2010 – for a measly $16.47!  Until then, I’ll just have to get some Sperry Top-Siders, a gingham button-up shirt and tortoiseshell Wayfarers to hold me over (and maybe a yellow raincoat).
