Thursday was a devastating day for three local businesses in south Minneapolis. The fire that started in the kitchen of Heidi’s, spread to Blackbird and Patina.

Obviously I was not in Minneapolis when it happened, so it’s very hard to believe these businesses are gone. Blocks from our house, I have passed by probably thousands of times. I ate at Blackbird last summer, and in addition to being delicious, its impeccable decor has given me a lot of design inspiration. Patina’s merchandise was museum gift shop quality, and has long been my favorite store in Minneapolis to buy birthday and Christmas presents. Though I had never eaten at Heidi’s, I did work with both Chef Stuart Woodman and Heidi Woodman at Restaurant Levain and Turtle Bread a few years ago. I can’t imagine how the staff and owners of these places feel. I sure hope they can rebuild.
